Our Mixed Breed Flock
This little mixed flock peacefully co-exists with the pigs, goats, chickens and sheep. They are beautiful to watch as they forage through the fields. During the breeding season, they lay well and build large nests that contain 12 or more eggs. They have always been diligent setters - setting on eggs that are often long past their expected hatching date - Unfortunately, they have been only marginally successful at hatching.
But suddenly this spring, things changed. One of the mixed breed flock managed to hatch 10 goslings!
We are so glad we kept this flock of big, gentle birds. Their offspring are not kept as breeders, but are harvested as meat birds. They are a great addition to the homestead.
